Portrait by Patrick A. Tupa

Furniture maker Steven Mark Revland has been designing and creating three dimensional art objects, primarily sculptural tables and chairs, for more than 50 years. He was fortunate to have had multiple appearances on HGTV’s “Modern Masters” series in the late 90’s, as well as numerous featured newspaper and magazine profiles. In 2023, he published his memoir, “simply revland” (how to succeed in life despite yourself) which is available in softcover, hardcover, and audiobook, as well as on the shelves of the Fargo Public Library.

Since 1974, Revland’s whimsical conversation pieces have been transported to countless homes, offices, galleries, and museums, and they continue on that journey even as Revland enters his seventies. Throughout the many decades, Revland has created over two thousand pieces of furniture, and delightfully continues to hone his craft at his home studio in Fargo, North Dakota.

Revland began his artistic career as a musician, performing on WDAY TV’s “Party Line” in 1963, as a nine year old. He went on to cut his first album in 1974, and still performs sporadically, resurrecting his old “act” from the ‘70s. However, it was high school wood-shop class in 1969 and 1970 that greatly contributed toward his decision to pursue a career as a furniture maker, knowing that any continued formal education was not in the cards.

Revland is currently the co-owner of Dakota Fine Art Gallery in Fargo, the 7th gallery he has owned since 1982. You can find his works there, across social media platforms, and his website, steverevland.com.

*The FMVA established the Member of the Year award in 2011 to celebrate the visual artists of the area and their contributions to the organization. We wanted to recognize their involvement and support because without the many hours of service provided by these artists, the FMVA could not be providing the range of opportunities it does today.
